Ratios for Nurses to Patients Coming to B.C.!
Hi IENs!
Hoping your start to 2025 has been great so far.
I wanted to share the news about British Columbia (B.C.) the first province in Canada to be introducing minimum nurse to patient ratios!
B.C. is the third place in the WORLD that will be implementing ratios! The only other places being Australia, and California - USA.
From reviewing where ratios are in effect, they have been seen to:
reduce patient mortality and also improve retention of staff! Yay.
This is such a huge step for nursing here as I’m sure many of us come from places that do not have ratios in effect, and working as nurses has us running around trying to care for an impossible amount of patients, leaving us feeling very unsafe and ineffective with what we are able to do at work.
The BCNU (B.C. Nurses Union) and the provincial government in B.C. are working very closely on this with an allocation of $750 million to make the ratios become a reality really soon! The ratios will be as follows:
**information taken from the BCNU website
They are kicking off the ratios by trying to recruit more nurses, by reducing the barriers for IENs, and also implementing the recruitment bonuses of up to $20,000 across the province as mentioned in my previous post here.
If you want to find out more about the minimum nurse to patient ratios, check this link on the BCNU website.
I am definitely looking forward to safer staffing levels!
If you are wanting to come to B.C. to work as a nurse, you can start by looking at the BCCNM (the nursing licensing body) website regarding the process
They have definitely removed a lot of barriers for IEN’s both by reducing the time to process and cost so it really is a good time to get licensed here.
To further support you to prepare for licensing in B.C. for the inspire global assessments (NCAS) / nursing in general in B.C. The Nursing Trail has the TNT Nursing Refresher available to assist you!
Hopefully B.C. continues to improve its working conditions for its staff!
